For a long time UglyMugs.ie has been attempting to engage with An Garda Síochána re crime against sex workers including trafficking. However, unfortunately, we have not been able to make any real progress here to date.
On 24th November the Policing Authority discussed this with An Garda Síochána.
At that meeting An Garda Síochána stated they were engaging with UglyMugs.ie and would continue to do so.
We do not feel this is a fair assessment of the situation. We note that we have been unable to get any meeting with An Garda Síochána since last year. Following the Policing Authority meeting we again wrote to An Garda Síochána requesting a meeting. We received no reply.
We believe An Garda Síochána needs to start taking crime against sex workers including trafficking seriously, but to date we see no indication of this happening.
An Garda Síochána's claims to be engaging with UglyMugs.ie are simply not true.
Police engagement is very important to UglyMugs.ie but we cannot engage with police who are not willing to engage with us. Unfortunately some police services still do not take crime against sex workers seriously and do not treat sex worker victims of crime properly and this appears to be the situation in the Republic of Ireland.
